Bells of St.Martin’s:
Details of the 8 Bells at Chelsfield are shown on the Loves Guide to the Church Bells of Kent website.
Our 6 bells were augmented to 8 in January 2009. The new bells were dedicated on Sunday 10 October 2010.
Chelsfield have an active band of ringers, the bellringers ring before our 10am and 6.30pm Sunday services; they also ring for weddings and special peals for particular occasions.
There were 4 peals and 10 quarter peals rung on our bells
during 2018. One peal in August was rung ‘fully muffled’ to commemorate the passing of Local Historian Geoffrey Copus.
One of the quarter peals, in November, was to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of the the WW1 Armistice. We also took part in the National Remembrance commemorations ringing at 12.30 pm on 11 November.
The tower once again took part in the Lewisham District Striking Competition, held at Downe in March, coming second. We also took part in the bi-annual Farnborough Trophy in July, and the Call-Change competition in at Farnborough in November.
At the start of September, along with the church, we took part in the Heritage Open Days Weekend. We gave talks and demonstrations.
If you are interested in learning to ring, particularly younger people, please contact:
The Tower Captain Philippa Rooke 01689 812236 email@example.com
Our ringing practice evening is on Mondays from 8pm - 9.30pm.
We have an Annual ringing outing in September each year, in 2018 it was to Sussex.
Chelsfield is in the Lewisham District of the Kent Association of Change Ringers. In 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 we won the Lewisham District Competition.
In 1999 we were the Leading tower for Quarter Peals in the District.
Chelsfield tower won the Kent County 6 Bell striking competition in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
